You probably don’t think twice about your morning cuppa or your afternoon pick me up, but the reality is that caffeine is not good for woman during menopause as it can trigger hot flushes and lead to problems sleeping and increase anxiety. Herbal teas to detoxify the liver

Why not sip on one of these herbal teas instead and give your liver some extra TLC.

Dandelion tea

coming off HRTThis tea can be made from the leaf, root or flower – it’s an incredible herb that can be a remedy for many health issues. Its biggest benefit is that it helps detoxify the liver as well as clear out excess oestrogen and other hormones. It behaves like a gentle laxative and diuretic for water retention without potassium loss which means it flushes out excess water, the kidneys and toxins as well as the urinary tract. It can also strengthen the liver and aid digestion.

During menopause, dandelion tea has other benefits too. It can reduce the frequency and intensity of hot flushes and because it has an abundance of magnesium it’s good for bone tissue, hair, teeth, skin and nails. It also has a lot of antioxidants and helps produce bile which breaks down fat and can help manage weight gain. It tends to taste a bit bitter so add some honey or lemon to taste.

Artichoke tea

It’s rich in folates, vitamins A, B1 and C, and minerals such as magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, iron, potassium, zinc and dietary fibre. It stimulates the liver function and the production of bile and is a diuretic, easing elimination of urea. As a diuretic, it’s thought to help with weight loss, helping to rid the body of excess body fat and preventing water retention, through the urine.

With a tea made from dried or fresh leaves and stems, you can get help with other symptoms such as nausea, abdominal pains, constipation, diarrhea, bloating. It’s also a natural remedy for heartburn and can reduce cholesterol and clear the skin. The taste of this tea can vary and can also be bit bitter so adding a squeeze of lemon can help.
