During this hot weather, it’s important to keep our bodies hydrated more than ever but drinking plenty of water during menopause is also essential as being dehydrated can make your symptoms worse. 

Why is drinking water during menopause is important?

Firstly, water is vital to life. The adult human body is composed of around 60% water and you need it to ensure that your body functions at an optimum level. So why is it so important during menopause? Simply put, being dehydrated could make your symptoms worse.

Hydration has a major effect on your energy levels, your brain function, your overall health, and your physical performance. Dehydration can exacerbate symptoms of fatigue, mood swings, give you brain fog and memory loss and may even increase your feelings of anxiety.

These effects of dehydration will be more marked when you are physically active or sweating due to heat exposure. However, they are also possible from just daily life. It’s easy to get dehydrated from just going about your daily life if you don’t make drinking water a priority.

You’ll also find that drinking plenty of water has the added benefits of preventing, or relieving, constipation and helping you to lose weight. Drinking a glass of water approximately 30 minutes before eating will help you to feel fuller. You’ll end up eating less, and in the long run, you’ll probably end up losing a little weight.

Tap or filtered?

The best choice is filtered water. Filtering water will help to remove any harmful contaminants that may be present in your water. These contaminants may be harmful bacteria or chemicals and it’s also possible for there to be trace amounts of pharmaceuticals. In fact, the most common form of birth control, the birth control pill, is a synthetic form of oestrogen that is not completely used by the body, the excess is then disposed of through urine, which makes its way into the sewer system. It’s nearly impossible for local municipal water plants to filter that out. It’s common to use either carbon filters or reverse osmosis to filter your water. Either process is a good option to give you water that is largely free from contaminants.
